I agree. Our regulars could go toe to toe with the Grenadier Guards.
Oh you have indeed. Oddly enough, I didn't see many posts I'd call a flame,
and therefore, feel that the actual discussion has helped me put in place
the various aspects of in-game Traveller world governments. So as off-topic
it is, it was still informative on outlooks, and to me, relevant to the game
in some ways.

Well, they would, wouldn't they ?

Seeing as the US instigated the war, invaded Canada, got thrown out again,
and a Brit force then ravaged up and down the east coast unchecked, sacking
Washington twice, before finally being stopped at New Orleans after peace
had been declared, I'd call it a loss for the US.

The only bright points for the US is that some of their ships did better
than anyone could have expected against the Royal Navy, and the New York
Militia went home, citing that using militia to invade another country was a
gross abuse of the founding documents of the country, which it was.

Of course, they only did this after it became obvious they weren't going to
get much loot & pillage, but still...

What was that about a "well-regulated militia" ? <grin>
I'm sure I read somewhere (can't for the life of me, think where?), that it
is current belief that sinister handedness is heading in the other
direction... that is that there is a natural flow towards left hand
dominance which (in theory) will see the majority of people in the future
left handed until us "righties" are the odd-ones-out! Mind you, it was a
"waiting-in-the-doctor's-office-out-of-date-either-medical-or-woman's-magazi
ne" that I'm sure I got it from... so I don't know if there are any other
reports/updates... Anyone?

I see what you are getting at Jim, I meant youth as opposed to childhood,
and I have vivid memories of gift shopping that is in no-way related to what
I see now... in fact, over the last 20 years it has gotten worse! My eldest
is 20, so I guess I have really observed it in those years like never
before.

For example, in a local school (this is done every year on some current
affairs show somewhere), the question is asked of children what the meaning
of Christmas is... when I was a child, I knew the "Jesus and wise men shit,"
but now the answers are, "When Santa gives me what I want" or "It's the time
I get new toys" and the one that stuck out most to me, "It's when Dad said
he would buy me a box (as opposed to just a packet) of Pokomon cards."

I never recalled shopping for a gift and finding (even recently in the
scheme of things), TMNT's varying from one store to the next by as much as
$100!!! It's a profit thing mate... it really IS different, and not just
the "inflation" difference or "it (an item) was much larger when I was
little" thing.

ObTrav: Is there anything like Christmas in the whole of the Imperium? I
assume there are world customs that may be close if not the same...
Hmmm.. The Inupiaq have been successfully hunting Polar Bears with
30-06 for many years, and spears or bows before that.... It is not the
caliber but the ability to hit the bear at the right place. Another
native, a Brother in Law of mine, frequently hunts bears with a .357 mag
revolver. A friend who once went hunting Kodiak brown bears with a .458
Win Mag failed to stop one charging after placing 5 rounds in it. His
hunting partner literally dropped the beast at his feet with several
additional rounds from a .375 H&H. This guy was an experienced hunter,
of both wildlife and people (3 term Vietnam vet with 101st, tunnel rat,
etc...), but the first shot did not score the right hit. Makes you
wonder....

But seriously, we are talking survival. IMHO if you crash land in a
polar region , I would rather expect that cold would the the most
pressing of your worries with shelter a close second. Carnivorous
beasties rank third or fourth with food and water. BTW, Polar bears are
notorious for hunting anything that moves on the ice, including man,
almost always from ambush.
Don't quote me on this, but I have heard that the average male who is
out christmas shopping suffers stress equal in intensity to a fighter pilot
in combat. I Do get stressed out in Myers but no ones shot a sidewinder at
me yet, so I'm not to sure of the validity of the statement.
I have oodles of CT, I prefer MT. I like the Rebellion, you can ignore
it or participate as you wish. A friend bought T4 and the erratta almost
made me homesick for MT (Thanks Micheal!) The only one I don't like is TNE
but thats only because of the combat rules, I think a Cyberpunk 2020
conversion for the combat would be great but I'm not buying more than two
editions of any game, it only encourages 'em.
The survival kit sets you up well for Polar survival, if your playing
Marooned Alone your wearing a Vacc Suit to start with. My idea for the gun
was what a government department may supply for a survival weapon that the
scouts promptly use for their own purposes, eg. shooting boarders with 18mm
HE "Lockpicking" rounds. I assume it's easier to hide illegal ammo than an
illegal weapon on an x-boat!
Question: The scenario lists the Survival kit as "the Imperial
Standard." Does this mean it's canon? Are you allowed to post it's contents
on your website?
Cheers,
Hah !

That remins me of a "special mission" I got sent on when in the RNZAF.

Remember when "Colonel" Rambuka took over Fiji ?

Well, there was a possibility our RRF (Ready Reaction Force) based at Linton
would be activated to retore the legal government of Fiji. But the RRF
didn't have enough rifles because they were being used by a Territorial
excercies near the Marlborough sounds, so we scrambled an Iroquois to fly
from Christchurch and bring back some rifles to Linton, so they couild be
ready to go.

Of course, because it was needed in a hurry, they had to use the SAR chopper
so the South Island didn't have SAR coverage while we went and got the
rifles.
Please, children (a term I use advisedly, as I remeber seeing Woodstiock on
the use of grav plates in suspension techniques, doing so might cause moral
Given the context of the rest of this thread, the use of the word "tab"
might not be the best.
Apparently this book was based on his experiences in Biafra. I'm
currently reading a book called _The New Mercenaries_ by Anthony
Mockler. It's about the modern mercenaries in the Congo, etc, and there
are a number of situations in it that would make for interesting Trav
scenarios.

IIRC until this war the US Federal government had no army, nor the
right to raise one. They relied on state militas, and the eastern
seaboard states (who had good militas) weren't interested in what was
basically just the (north) western states trying a land grab.

The 1812 war is a wonderful example of why amateurs shouldn't be
allowed to command armies, and why military appointments shouldn't be
made for political reasons.
I would suggest that the fact that you're searching the boot of
someone's car means that there's a good chance he's a scumbag, gun or
no gun. Assuming that a copper has to show due cause to search a car
where you are, that is.
